Volunteering at Isabella is a win-win situation for everyone.

Volunteers are highly valued members of our family, treated with the tremendous respect and gratitude they deserve. And while they’re here, volunteers have the opportunity to feel great by making a difference in people’s lives, and to learn new skills and make new friends as well.

Our volunteers are…

  • individuals with free time who want to help
  • participants from community groups, agencies and rehabilitation programs
  • adults and young people from faith-based organizations
  • interns from high school, colleges and graduate programs
  • young people who would like to do community service
  • student groups from elementary and high schools

Volunteering at Isabella gives you a chance to…
  • get involved
  • learn new skills
  • make new friends
  • gain work experience
  • explore careers
  • achieve the satisfaction of making a difference
  • receive guidance, support and recognition
  • belong to a community

Adult volunteering opportunities at Isabella

We value almost any asset you can bring to Isabella, even if it is simply the time and patience to sit quietly with a resident who needs a friend. Here are some of the many contributions our adult volunteers offer us:

  • assisting nursing, rehabilitation and recreation staff in the care of our residents
  • providing companionship and emotional support to residents
  • lending a hand in our Child Care Center
  • assisting with the work of various administrative and support services departments
  • helping with special events

Youth opportunities include:

Isabella’s Caring Partner Program: High School students who have prior volunteer community service and/or who have participated in the Summer Youth Employment Program may be eligible to apply for one of the after-school paid working experiences at Isabella.

In this program, students are paid to work with Isabella staff in the non-personal care of our residents. The Caring Partner Program provides the opportunity to:

  • learn about the aging process
  • enhance the quality of life for Isabella residents
  • explore the possibility of a career in health care

Community Service: Isabella offers many satisfying opportunities for students to fulfill high school community service requirements.

Programs by Children’s Arts and Science Workshops Inc. and Alianza Dominicana: These community organizations and others have referred students to work in paying positions in our Child Day Care Center, with residents in our Therapeutic Recreation Department, in Support Services, and in offices where they can gain experience working with computers.

Summer Youth Employment Program: Students age 14 to 21 come from our northern Manhattan community and must be income eligible (low income) to join. Funding comes from the City of New York and registration usually takes place in March.

Summer Mentoring Program for Children of Isabella Union Employees: Students age 15 to 17 must be children of members of the Hospital Worker's Union (1199 SEIU). The Union pays for 24 hours of service per week for a period of 7 weeks during the summer.

Summer Mentoring Program for Children of Isabella Non-Union Employees: Students age 14 to 18 gain paid work experience in various positions at Isabella for a period of 7 weeks in the summer to a maximum of 24 hours per week.
